Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is a serious fungal infection that affects elm trees, spreading through beetles and root connections between trees. Once infected, trees show wilting, yellowing, and eventually die. Unfortunately, there is no cure, so prevention is key.
How to Protect Your Elm Trees
Prune Only in Winter: Lethbridge has strict elm pruning rules—pruning season ends on March 31. After this, pruning is banned until October to prevent beetle attraction.
Dispose of Wood Properly: Never store or transport elm firewood, as it can carry the disease.
Watch for Symptoms: If you notice wilting leaves or dead branches, take note and contact an Arborist who can take the next steps in care of the tree
.
By following these steps, we can help keep Lethbridge’s elm trees healthy for generations to come. If your elms need pruning, book before March 31 to stay compliant!
